Amyn Kaderali Biography
Amyn Kaderali was one of those kids you hear about who got their hands on a video camera in middle school and never let go. Maybe growing up in Marin County, CA during the era of Spielberg and Lucas is to blame, or maybe he just liked yelling "Action!" Whatever it was, the kid got hooked on filmmaking and cinema's magic ability to bring stories to life, to provoke laughter and tears, and to inspire and understand each other. He knew writing and directing were what he wanted to do with his life. While at UCLA, Amyn took one big step closer to his dreams of becoming a filmmaker when he was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program. He not only got his MFA there, but also received the Martin Scorsese Young Filmmaker Award and the Perry Ellis Breakthrough Filmmaker Award for his short film, Little Man, which won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Short at the 1998 Slamdance Film Festival, the prestigious Lew Wasserman Award and Best Short Awards in Melbourne, Bilbao, and Marin County. But the greatest honor was hearing one of his heroes, Martin Scorsese, call the film "simply excellent."Amyn's NYU thesis film, "Take the 'A' Train," starred Kerry Washington ("Ray," "Scandal") and received the Kodak Cinematic Images Award. In 2004, he completed the outsourcing comedy short "Call Center" (an early viral video hit with over 1 million viewers) winner of Best Comedy at the Riverside International Film Festival as well as a Golden Reel Nomination at the VC Film Festival. In 2007, Amyn wrote, produced, and directed his first feature film, the romantic comedy "Kissing Cousins." The film won the Audience Choice Award at the Asian American International Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by Cinema Libre. Subsequently, he wrote and directed "The Other Side," a futuristic twist on America's immigration dilemma, for the PBS/ITVS "Futurestates" short film series. In addition, Amyn has written several feature-length screenplays and television pilots. This fall, Amyn completed the Disney/ABC Directing Fellowship and directed an episode of ABC's "Private Practice," his network television debut. With a reputation as a smart, level-headed, and skilled filmmaker, Amyn has the rare ability to put his cast and crew at ease while drawing out the best in them. The kid with the camera is living his dream.
