Watch Star Trek: On the day of James T. Jim is a diminutive form of the forename "James". Diminutive meaning is a shorting of various words and names. So no. They didn't 'mess up.'

James T. Kirk is Jim in the old series. Spock and McCoy both called him Jim everyone else James T. Kirk or Captain.

Great movie but they mess up sometimes. They say James T. Kirk for the main character but they also say Jim.

Actually James and Jim are the same name. Jim or even Jimmy being a nickname for someone named James.
